Holiday Dieting: A Sweet Way To Cheat!

Holidays

If your diet is making you a humbug this season, there's some good news. Turns out dark chocolate, that decadent confection, may actually be good for you!

Yes, recently conducted studies published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition have shown that a dose of dark chocolate will heed all sorts of healthy results. And with the holidays just around the corner, this news couldn't have come at a better time.

So just for fun, I thought I'd conduct a mini-research project of my own and get the "skinny" on our friend dark chocolate. Here's some of the interesting "factoids" I came up with:

  • Cocoa-the precursor to chocolate--has been around a long time. A few thousand years, in fact. It has been thought that cocoa beans were brought to Europe in the 1500's by Christopher Columbus.

  • Cocoa, later made into chocolate, was given to American Soldiers in WWII. A source of high energy, each solider was given a three chocolate bar per day ration, according to historical data.

  • Researchers started getting more involved when studies began showing that in addition to being a high energy food, chocolate also seems to stimulate elevated moods. Researchers found truth to this, showing that dark chocolate does, in fact, increase levels of the mood-altering chemicals such as serotonin and endorphins.

  • Some researchers have also gone on to conduct major studies to prove the correlation between chocolate and a true physiological craving. (Check out "Why Women Need Chocolate," written by Debra Waterhouse, Registered Dietician in 1999).

  • And, the best news yet. Upon further study, it has been found that the "flavonoids" in dark chocolate are scientifically proven to act as antioxidants, preventing "bad" cholesterol (LDL) in the blood from oxidizing and clogging arteries.

So, if you are looking for a healthy way to "cheat" this holiday season, dark chocolate may not be all together a bad option. Facts aside, however, and before you run out to fill your shopping cart full, keep these guidelines in mind:

  • Heed the advice of Aristotle: "Everything in moderation." Refrain from taking the "chocolate factory tour." Keep your chocolate fix to a minimum. Enjoy it, but please don't over do.

  • When you are shopping for chocolate, try to find "dark" varieties with at least 70% cocoa.

  • Also, make sure "sugar" or "butter fat" are not the first items listed.

If you'd like to skip the treat and not the fun, send a virtual chocolate postcard from this fun chocolate website (no calories included) : http://www.virtualchocolate.com/index.cfm

To summarize my findings, it appears that dark chocolate is in fact our friend (and we will just leave its aphrodisiac qualities to your own private discussion groups, thanks).

As for the cravings?.Well, do we really "need" chocolate?

Survey says: Dunno. But, with the holidays upon us, a Hershey's Special Dark Chocolate once in a while-now available in the "sugar free" variety, mind you--sounds sweet enough to me.

Create A Holiday Feast For The Senses
This is my daughter's first Christmas. Naomi will be nearly nine months old and eager to explore all that the holidays have to offer. Within a few weeks after conception, babies develop the sense of touch, with taste, smell, hearing and sight following in that order. At birth, babies possess all the senses they will have through their lives, just waiting for sensory experiences to learn about the world. The senses quickly become more acute, until adulthood when they ...(related: Holidays)

Fourth Of July Quotes
MADRID ? For millions of Americans, this Fourth of July will be a time of celebration and remembrance of those passed or distanced by war. The annual commemoration of Independence Day has always been a bittersweet time for Americans who evoke the thoughts of Cordell Hull, "I am certain that, however great the hardships and the trials which loom ahead, our America will endure and the cause of human freedom will triumph."First celebrated in 1776 and declared a legal holiday in 1941, the Fourth of July is truly the most American of all holidays. A time for ...(related: Holidays)

Celebrate Your Freedom: 6 Important Freedoms To Celebrate Everyday
At the end of the movie "Braveheart," William Wallace is tortured but refuses to cry out. Is Buying A Gift For Mom As Difficult For You As It Is For Me?
I have walked through a countless number of stores searching for a Mother's Day gift and I always see the same things. A nice blouse, a trinket for the kitchen, or perhaps a bottle of perfume (do they all smell the same to you too, or is it just me?). After three stores I am tired and frustration begins to set in.At this point I am asking myself serious questions. Is it ok to get that great "one" gift that Mom loved a few years ago, but maybe in a slightly different style or shape? Will she like it as much and does she really need another? This is the jigsaw puzzle that was my life and I tend to think that I am not alone. Last ...(related: Holidays)

Halloween & Hounds
Halloween is "fright night" for humans not dogs. Screaming, running, spooky children in masks make many dogs uncomfortable, nervous and frightened.Halloween costumes are fun and are meant to disguise our normal appearance. Dogs do not understand this change in appearance and may become frightened. Costumes that change the way a person walks, stands, or their general appearance may cause a dog to react different then usual even with those they know.Keep in mind that children on Halloween night are excited and doing their best to be scary. This is not a fair or safe situation to put even the best of dogs in. Even the normally terrific tolerant...(related: Holidays)

Marching Towards Mothers Day
"Mother: the most beautiful word on the lips of mankind." -Kahil GibranThis coming Sunday is our "big day," moms. It's the one day a year when we get officially honored for what it is that we do. I don't know about you, but I usually find myself reflecting on exactly what my role is, anyway. Motherhood has evolved over the past two generations into a job which, many would argue, looks far different than the job our own mothers knew. And given the unfortunate-and oftentimes divisive-dichotomy between "working mom" and "stay-at-home mom" with which many categorize themselves, the job description sometimes gets fuzzier, rather than clearer. Does extensive volunteer work place you under the "working" or "stay-at-home" group? Does a part-time position at your kids' school o...(related: Holidays)

But all the running around we do can zap the fun. Here are some ideas to simplify the season.Gift Giving:
