Overcoming Loneliness This Christmas

Holidays

Christmas is one of those times when the social norm is to get together with our families even if you never see them during the year. For those people who are isolated from their families, or do not have a family, it can be a time of great loneliness and even depression.

The day can remind us of what we do not have in our lives. Even if this does not bother us at any other time of the year, it can get to us at Christmas. The thought that everyone else is with their families can really weigh upon us.

There are many people who will be alone on Christmas day, so don't think that you are the only one, or that you are in any way a failure if you find yourself without company at this time.

There are a number of things that you can do to make the day more pleasant for yourself.

1) Plan a special day for yourself

Plan to spoil yourself on Christmas Day. Plan a number of things that you really enjoy doing.

Hire your favourite video,

read a good book,

buy some beautiful fresh flowers for your house,

buy yourself a present and wrap it and put it under the tree.

Even though it is just you make a special meal with all your favourite foods.

Take a picnic to your favourite spot.

Listen to your favourite music.

Go out and see a Christmas play.

Go to Church

2) Go out to lunch or on an organised tour

Getting out and meeting others can be a great way to spend your day. You might even make some new friends.

Talk to your local council, they will know where a community Christmas meal will be served.

Travel agents and local councils will be able to put you in touch with people organising tours on Christmas day. There may be trips to the country where you will have a nice meal. Or there may be tours of Christmas scenes and lights.

3) Help others

Help out at a homeless shelter for the day and spread Christmas cheer to others. The Salvation Army or other church organisations or poverty groups will be grateful for any help you can offer. Helping others is always a great way to cheer yourself up.

4) Invite others over for a Christmas meal.

If you know of others who are going to be alone you can invite them over for a meal. You can delegate so everyone brings something to eat and make sure everyone knows what time you are expecting them.

Make sure you decide before hand whether you want to exchange gifts or not. That way no one will be embarrassed by not having gifts for the others.

This is only a small sample of ways to enjoy your Christmas more. I am sure you can come up with others. The idea is to plan your day and fill it with things you enjoy. When you do this, you will have something to look forward to on the day, instead of a long day spent alone, thinking about all the things you are missing.

Halloween & Hounds
Halloween is "fright night" for humans not dogs. Screaming, running, spooky children in masks make many dogs uncomfortable, nervous and frightened.Halloween costumes are fun and are meant to disguise our normal appearance. Dogs do not understand this change in appearance and may become frightened. Costumes that change the way a person walks, stands, or their general appearance may cause a dog to react different then usual even with those they know.Keep in mind that children on Halloween night are excited and doing their best to be scary. This is not a fair or safe situation to put even the best of dogs in. Even the normally terrific tolerant...(related: Holidays)

Ideas For Toddler Halloween Costumes
Depending on the age of your little ones, you may want to keep ideas for toddler Halloween costumes on the simple side. Since most of the very youngest trick or treaters are only going out to amuse the grandparents and immediate neighbors, it needn't be terribly complicated to still bring a lot of smiles. For infants, and those who get tired of walking, animal costumes work very well, can be done in minutes, and don't require great sewing skills.Turn your toddler into a cow, with a white hooded shirt, white sweat pants, black wool and some black felt. Cut cow-type "splotches" out of the felt, and either use double-sided tape or easily removed basting stitches to attach to the shirt ...(related: Holidays)

Salome And Herodias, A Curious Mothers Day Story, Part 1 Of 2 Parts
First, a disclaimer:This article requires information about John the Baptist, whose life and works and words are holy, divinely inspired, to Christians. The sources I've accessed are religious, historical, literary, exegetic, and anecdotal. In order to avoid disrespect for the sacredness of the words and concepts with which Christians hold The Gospels and with which Jews hold The Torah, I've renamed both 'translated redactions.' I also use the euphemism, monotheistic god, to avoid any disrespect to any deity and religion. This is an essay designed to entertain and inform you, Dear Reader, not to...(related: Holidays)

Tis The Season
I was listening to one of my favorite radio talk programs today. The topic of the hour was "do you feel burdened by Christmas?" Much to my amazement the host, and the majority of his guests, spent the better part of an hour whining and moaning about the burdensome nature of the holiday season. "I hate being with my relatives." "Why do I have to spend all this money on presents for people I don't like?" "There's too much pressure!" "The traffic in the stores is ridiculous." It went on and on and on!It's a well known fact that people tend to be more depressed during the holiday season....(related: Holidays)

Youre How Old?!?
"Well, Happy Birthday! How old are you anyway?""Oh, I'm just 29 ? again."It's a harmless game, denying our age, right? We play sensitive about our age as we get older, as we get further away from birth and closer to death. It's just a way to share our unease of growing older with people around us.Try as we might, time marches on and we get older just the same. I was reminded about this when I recently read that we are now...(related: Holidays)
